Charming, compact and full of subtle elegance, Tulipa 'Willem van den Akker' is a beautiful Greigii Tulip, prized for its softly coloured blooms and attractive ornamental foliage. The elegant flowers open in creamy ivory-white, delicately flamed with dusky rose-pink, before revealing a warm golden-bronze centre as they fully open in the spring sunshine.

Like all Greigii tulips, this variety offers interest long before flowering begins. Its broad grey-green leaves are beautifully mottled with rich maroon markings, creating an attractive display in their own right and providing a wonderful backdrop to the delicate blooms.

Flowering in April, 'Willem van den Akker' reaches a compact 25–35cm in height, making it ideal for rock gardens, patio containers, raised beds and the front of sunny borders. The flowers open wide on sunny days before gently closing again in the evening, bringing movement and changing interest throughout the day.

Compact, reliable and easy to grow, this delightful Greigii tulip performs exceptionally well in containers and often returns for several years when grown in well-drained soil.

A graceful and refined tulip that combines delicate colouring with attractive foliage for an elegant early spring display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Willem van den Akker' is perfect for rock gardens, patio containers, raised beds and the front of sunny borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and incorporate horticultural grit if drainage is poor.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, only water during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers after blooming if seed is not required.
  • Allow the beautifully mottled foliage to die back naturally so the bulbs can store energy for next spring.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and reliable flowering.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts where both the beautifully marked foliage and delicate flowers can be appreciated. It combines wonderfully with Muscari, species Narcissus and other Greigii tulips.
