One of the most admired florist's anemones, Anemone coronaria 'Lord Lieutenant' produces magnificent semi-double blooms in rich violet-blue shades, beautifully surrounding a dramatic dark centre.

Introduced in the late Victorian era and still highly prized today, 'Lord Lieutenant' is renowned for its large flowers, exceptional colour and outstanding performance as both a garden and cut flower. The silky petals create a luxurious, almost peony-like appearance, bringing elegance and sophistication to spring displays.

The vivid blue-violet blooms are held above finely divided fern-like foliage and make a striking contrast against fresh spring greenery. Whether planted in borders, containers or cutting gardens, this variety never fails to attract attention.

Like all Anemone coronaria varieties, 'Lord Lieutenant' traces its origins to the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for centuries. Its nectar-rich flowers are also attractive to bees and other early pollinators.

A superb choice for gardeners seeking bold colour, long-lasting flowers and armfuls of beautiful spring bouquets.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in autumn (September to November) for spring flowering, or in early spring for summer blooms.

Soak First:
Before planting, soak the corms in lukewarm water for 6–8 hours to help rehydrate them and encourage faster growth.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. Ideal for borders, containers, or cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: 5 cm (2 inches)
  • Spacing: 10–15 cm apart
  • Position: Plant the corms with the pointed end down (if unclear, plant on their side – they’ll sort themselves out).

Aftercare:
Water after planting and keep the soil lightly moist during active growth. Mulch lightly in colder areas to protect from severe frost. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms.

Flowering Time:
March–May (if autumn planted), or June–August (if spring planted).
