Looking like a Tulip these are sometimes known as T. edulis but they are from the Far East wheras the true Tulips are central Asian so unlikely to be in the same family. They actually fall in the Lily family. In Japan they grow in meadows near watercourses at low altitudes. Martin Rix in the Bulb Book says that they are "easy to grow in a well drained sunny position, dormant in summer but should not need protection from rain". We have evidently cossetted them too much! Ivory coloured flowers with darker markings - stoloniferous and flowering from small bulbs with bulb tunics a very deep orange.
