Narcissus February Gold

One of the earliest daffodils to flower, Narcissus 'February Gold' is a true harbinger of spring, producing cheerful golden-yellow blooms that brighten the garden when little else is in flower. Its early flowering habit, graceful form and outstanding reliability have made it a favourite with gardeners for over a century.

Introduced in the 1920s, this award-winning cyclamineus hybrid is renowned for its elegant, windswept appearance. The reflexed petals sweep gracefully backwards from a long, flared trumpet, giving each flower a lively, windswept look. The blooms emerge a rich golden-yellow and are carried on sturdy stems above slender grey-green foliage, standing up well to late winter weather.

Flowering from as early as February, 'February Gold' is invaluable for bringing colour to borders, rockeries, containers and woodland gardens. It naturalises readily in lawns and beneath deciduous trees, where it gradually forms generous drifts that return faithfully each spring. The flowers are also lightly fragrant and provide an important early source of nectar for emerging pollinators.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'February Gold' is perfect for borders, containers, rockeries, woodland gardens and naturalising beneath deciduous trees or through lawns.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
• Spacing: Space bulbs about 10 cm (4 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and grit if necessary to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, daffodils usually require watering only during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

• Deadhead faded flowers to prevent seed production.
• Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
• Apply a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs for the following spring.

Top Tip:
