Renowned as one of the finest lilac tulips ever introduced, Tulipa 'Bleu Aimable' produces elegant, cup-shaped flowers in exquisite shades of soft lavender-lilac with subtle silvery-blue overtones that give the variety its famous name.

Introduced in 1916, this much-loved Single Late Tulip has remained a favourite with gardeners for more than a century. Although no tulip is truly blue, 'Bleu Aimable' comes remarkably close, with its cool pastel colouring creating a sophisticated and calming effect in the late spring garden.

The large, perfectly formed blooms are carried on strong, weather-resistant stems, making them equally valuable in borders and as outstanding cut flowers. Their gentle colouring blends effortlessly with whites, deep purples, soft pinks and fresh greens, making them a favourite for both traditional cottage gardens and contemporary planting schemes.

Flowering towards the end of the tulip season, 'Bleu Aimable' extends the display well into late spring, providing colour when many earlier tulips have already finished. Its elegant blooms are long-lasting both in the garden and in the vase.

A timeless classic and one of the most graceful pastel tulips you can grow.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Bleu Aimable' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, once the soil has cooled but before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Ideal for borders, formal bedding, cutting gardens and large patio containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water well after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it, so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Avoid excessively wet soil during summer dormancy to help bulbs remain healthy.

Top Tip:
Pair 'Bleu Aimable' with deep purple Alliums, white tulips or silver foliage plants for an elegant and sophisticated late-spring planting scheme.
