Bright, cheerful and one of the very first tulips to flower each spring, Tulipa 'Flair' is a dazzling Single Early Tulip that produces vibrant scarlet-red blooms, each dramatically edged with brilliant golden-yellow flames. Its bold, fiery colouring makes it an unmistakable herald of spring, bringing warmth and energy to the garden after the winter months.

The beautifully formed, cup-shaped flowers are carried on sturdy stems that cope well with early spring weather, making 'Flair' a dependable performer in borders, containers and public displays. As the flowers mature, the vivid red petals open wider to reveal their glowing golden base, creating an eye-catching contrast that shines in sunshine.

Awarded the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), 'Flair' is recognised for its excellent garden performance, reliability and outstanding colour. Flowering from early to mid-spring, it combines beautifully with blue Muscari, white Narcissus and other early tulips to create vibrant seasonal displays.

Perfect for borders, patio pots, window boxes and cutting gardens, Tulipa 'Flair' is an easy-to-grow classic that never fails to brighten the spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Flair' is ideal for borders, patio containers, window boxes, rockeries and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Flair' in bold groups with blue Muscari or white daffodils for a vibrant early spring display. Its compact habit also makes it an excellent choice for patio pots and window boxes.
