South African in origin and commonly named the Pineapple Plant as the topknot of leaves above the flower head does resemble that fruit. They appear above the ground only after the frosts have gone and go dormant with the first autumn frosts so when planted deeply can be regarded as being hardy in most of the UK. For garden or very large pots. Our own selected plants identified and isolated here from the group above with darker leaves, dark stems and purple flowers. But not quite as dark, or as uniform, as the darkest clone E. Sparkling Burgundy (now not easily obtained)

Planting Instructions

The bulbs are fist sized and most should flower in the summer following planting. Plant deeply and 15"(40cm) apart in a sunny spot in well prepared soil in the garden or in big well watered pots.
