Delphinium ‘Dark Blue White Bee’ is a classic cottage-garden showpiece, producing tall, elegant spires packed with richly coloured flowers. The blooms are a gorgeous deep, dark blue, each one finished with a bright white “bee” at the centre—creating a crisp contrast that really stands out in the border. Perfect for adding height and structure, this delphinium looks superb at the back of mixed borders, in traditional cottage gardens, and in cutting gardens where those dramatic stems can be enjoyed indoors too.

Once established, it’s a reliable summer performer and a real magnet for pollinators. With a little support and regular deadheading, you’ll often get a second flush of flowers later in the season as well—more flowers for you, and more nectar for the bees.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, when the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, but avoid frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Delphiniums love good soil and regular feeding. Ideal for the back of borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens. A sheltered spot is best, as tall flower spikes can be affected by strong winds.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as it is in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow good airflow and room to grow.
  • Soil Prep: Dig in well-rotted compost or manure before planting to boost moisture retention and flowering.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during dry spells, especially in spring and early summer. Mulching helps keep roots cool and reduces watering needs.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Stake early to support tall stems and prevent wind damage.
  • Feed in spring and again as buds form for the best flower spikes (a general fertiliser or high potash feed works well).
  • Deadhead spent flower stems to encourage a second flush later in the season.
  • Cut back stems after flowering and tidy old growth in autumn or early spring.

Top Tip:
For a true cottage garden look, plant alongside roses, Achillea and Salvias—and pop a few stems in a vase for a spectacular indoor display.
