Brunnera ‘Sea Heart’ is a standout shade-loving perennial, grown for its large, heart-shaped leaves in shimmering silvery-green with bold green veining—beautiful from spring right through to autumn. In spring it also produces dainty sprays of tiny forget-me-not blue flowers, which float above the foliage and add a lovely extra layer of interest.
It’s perfect for brightening shady borders, underplanting shrubs and trees, or bringing a cool, calming feel to woodland-style planting. Brunnera is also brilliant for creating contrast—those reflective leaves make darker corners feel lighter, and it pairs beautifully with Hostas, Ferns, Heucheras and spring bulbs.
When to Plant:
Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, avoiding frozen or waterlogged conditions.
Where to Plant:
Choose a spot in partial shade or full shade with moist, well-drained soil. Brunnera is ideal for shady borders, woodland gardens, under trees and shrubs and north-facing areas. It prefers soil that stays evenly moist, especially in summer.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Water during dry spells—Brunnera dislikes drying out.
