Erysimum ‘Magenta’ is a brilliant wallflower-style perennial that brings rich magenta-purple blooms and a lovely gentle fragrance to the garden for weeks on end. Flowering generously in spring and often continuing well into summer (especially with deadheading), it’s perfect for adding bold colour to borders, pots and gravel gardens. The flowers are also a magnet for pollinators, making it a great choice if you like a garden that’s buzzing with life.

Supplied in a 2 litre pot, Erysimum ‘Magenta’ is a strong, well-established plant that settles in quickly and starts performing fast. It’s particularly good near paths or seating areas where you can enjoy the colour up close—and catch that classic wallflower scent on warm days.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, but avoid frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position (or light shade) with well-drained soil. Erysimum thrives in borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens and patio containers. It prefers soil that doesn’t stay wet in winter, so good drainage is key.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow plants to fill out and keep good airflow.
  • Soil Prep: On heavy soil, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage. Avoid over-feeding—Erysimum prefers moderately fertile soil.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, Erysimum is fairly drought tolerant, but water during prolonged dry spells, especially in its first season and when grown in pots.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage a longer flowering season.
  • Lightly trim back after the main flush to keep plants compact and encourage fresh growth.
  • In colder or wetter areas, ensure plants have good drainage to help them overwinter successfully.

Top Tip:
Erysimum ‘Magenta’ looks stunning with silvery foliage and spring bulbs—try pairing with lavender, nepeta or tulips for a border full of colour and contrast.
