Erysimum ‘Sunset’ is a richly coloured, wallflower-style perennial that brings a warm glow to the garden for weeks on end. Its flowers open in a beautiful blend of sunset shades—often mixing orange, copper, apricot and soft red tones—creating a constantly changing display as new blooms open and older ones deepen in colour. It’s a fantastic plant for adding warmth to spring and early summer borders, and it’s equally happy in pots where you can enjoy the colour up close.

As well as being long-flowering, Erysimum ‘Sunset’ is loved by pollinators, making it a great choice for wildlife-friendly planting. Supplied in a 2 litre pot, it’s a strong, well-established plant that should settle in quickly and start performing fast.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, but avoid frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position (or light shade) with well-drained soil. Erysimum thrives in borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens and patio containers. It prefers soil that doesn’t stay wet in winter, so good drainage is key.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow plants to fill out and keep good airflow.
  • Soil Prep: On heavy soil, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage. Avoid over-feeding—Erysimum prefers moderately fertile soil.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, Erysimum is fairly drought tolerant, but water during prolonged dry spells, especially in its first season and when grown in pots.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage a longer flowering season.
  • Lightly trim back after the main flush to keep plants compact and encourage fresh growth.
  • In colder or wetter areas, ensure plants have good drainage to help them overwinter successfully.

Top Tip:
For a real “sunset border”, pair Erysimum ‘Sunset’ with tulips and alliums in spring, then let it mingle with Salvias and ornamental grasses as summer arrives.
