Crocosmia ‘Emily McKenzie’ is a much-loved classic, bringing rich, warm colour to the garden in mid to late summer. It produces arching sprays of burnt orange flowers with a distinctive deep red-brown “eye” in the centre of each bloom, giving the flowers extra depth and a slightly vintage, glowing look. The stems rise above neat, sword-shaped foliage, adding movement and structure to borders, and it’s a brilliant plant for that cottage-garden style.

This variety is also fantastic for pollinators and makes an excellent cut flower. Once established, it forms reliable clumps that return year after year, gradually increasing to create an even better display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocosmia corms in spring once the soil starts to warm. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Crocosmia is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly planting. In cooler or exposed areas, a warm, sheltered spot helps it perform at its best.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart. Plant in groups for the best display.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with a little compost. In heavy soil, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting and keep lightly moist while shoots appear. Once growing, Crocosmia is fairly tolerant, but will flower best with water during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants tidy.
  • Leave foliage in place after flowering until it yellows naturally—this feeds the corms for next year.
  • In autumn, mulch clumps in colder areas for winter protection.
  • Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Crocosmia ‘Emily McKenzie’ looks gorgeous with grasses and late-summer perennials. Try pairing it with Rudbeckias, Achilleas or deep purple Salvias for a warm, glowing border full of colour.
