Hemerocallis ‘Night Embers’ is a real showstopper, producing large, velvety, deep wine-red blooms with a subtle darker eye and a glowing golden throat that makes the colour look even richer in sunshine. Each flower lasts just a day (hence the name “daylily”), but don’t worry—this plant produces loads of buds over many weeks, so the display keeps coming. The arching, grassy foliage forms a tidy clump that’s great for filling gaps in borders, and it’s famously tough: heat tolerant, largely pest-free, and brilliant for low-maintenance gardening.

A lovely extra bonus: daylilies are not true lilies at all, so they don’t carry the same strong fragrance/pollen issues many people associate with lilies. They’re also very hardy and long-lived—once established they’ll bulk up year after year, giving you more flowers each season. Perfect for borders, cottage gardens, and contemporary planting schemes, and excellent alongside grasses, Salvias, Echinacea and Achillea.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun for the best flowering, although light shade is tolerated. Daylilies are wonderfully adaptable and grow well in most garden soils, but they perform best in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and low-maintenance planting.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown sits just below the soil surface (around 2–3 cm), with roots spread out.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow clumps to thicken over time.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted manure for stronger growth and better flowering.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep watered during dry spells in the first season; once established, Hemerocallis is fairly drought tolerant, but flowers best with occasional deep watering in hot weather.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy and encourage more buds to open.
  • Cut back tired foliage in autumn, or leave until spring and tidy then.
  • Divide congested clumps every 3–5 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and increase your stock.

Top Tip:
For the best display, plant Hemerocallis ‘Night Embers’ in full sun and feed with a general fertiliser in spring. Daylilies are superb for beginners—they’re hardy, long-lived and reliably flower year after year.
