Hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ is a truly adorable miniature hosta, loved for its perfectly rounded, thick, blue-green leaves that form a neat, tidy mound—like little mouse ears (the name couldn’t be more fitting!). Despite its cute size, it’s a tough, reliable perennial and a brilliant choice for bringing structure and texture to shady spots. The foliage has a lovely powdery blue bloom, especially in spring and early summer, and because the leaves are thick and slightly puckered, it’s generally more resilient than many hostas (including better resistance to light slug/snail damage).

In summer, short stems carry dainty, lavender-purple, bell-shaped flowers that hover above the foliage and attract pollinators. It’s perfect for the front of a border, woodland planting, shaded rockeries, patio containers, and even trough gardens—anywhere you want a little pop of cool colour and charm. A great “collector’s” hosta too, and an excellent option if you’re short on space.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare roots in spring (or in autumn while dormant), when the soil is moist and workable. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled shade with moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Hostas thrive in cooler, sheltered spots and are ideal for shady borders, woodland gardens, and containers. Morning sun is fine, but avoid hot afternoon sun which can scorch foliage.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown (growing point) sits about 2–3 cm below the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) apart to allow room to form a neat clump.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in well-rotted compost or leaf mould to help retain moisture and encourage strong growth.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water during dry spells—especially if grown in containers.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a mulch of compost in spring to conserve moisture and feed the plant.
  • Remove faded flower stems after flowering to keep it tidy (or leave if you enjoy the blooms).
  • Cut back old foliage after it dies down in autumn.
  • Protect emerging shoots in spring from slugs/snails (a sheltered spot and good garden hygiene helps).

Top Tip:
Hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ is a brilliant choice for pots and troughs—place it near a doorway or path so you can enjoy the detail of its gorgeous blue leaves up close. Pair with ferns, Heuchera and Brunnera for an easy, stylish shade display.
