Kniphofia ‘Alcazar’ is a true showstopper, producing tall, dramatic spires of fiery orange-red flowers with glowing yellow tones that rise above bold, strap-like green foliage. Flowering for weeks through summer, these “torch” blooms add instant height and hot colour to sunny borders, gravel gardens and prairie-style schemes — and they’re a magnet for pollinators, especially bees.

A tough, architectural perennial once established, ‘Alcazar’ copes well with heat and drier conditions, and its upright flower spikes make a fantastic statement in planting groups. It also makes an excellent cut flower, bringing that sunset colour indoors. Fun fact: Kniphofias originate from South Africa, which explains their love of sunshine and free-draining soils — give them the right spot and they’ll reward you year after year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Kniphofia thrives in free-draining ground and performs best in a warm spot. Ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, prairie-style planting, and wildlife-friendly schemes. Avoid waterlogged soil, especially in winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown sits level with the soil surface (do not bury too deeply).
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow room for the clump to mature.
  • Soil Prep: In heavier soils, improve drainage by adding grit or sharp sand. Avoid over-feeding—too much nitrogen can cause lots of leaves but fewer flowers.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep lightly watered while establishing. Once settled, Kniphofia is fairly drought tolerant, needing only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage more blooms and keep the plant looking tidy.
  • In autumn, leave foliage in place for winter prot
