Lilium ‘Hocus Pocus’ brings a real touch of magic to summer borders and patio pots. This Oriental lily produces large, luminous blooms in pale blush pink, each petal beautifully highlighted with a soft golden/ivory-yellow stripe down the centre — like it’s glowing from within. Many growers also note a subtle lilac sheen, which gives the flowers an extra, elegant depth as they open.

As well as the looks, it’s a treat for the senses: Oriental lilies are prized for their fragrance, and ‘Hocus Pocus’ is no exception — perfect near a seating area, pathway or front door so you can enjoy that classic lily scent in the evening. It’s also a brilliant cut flower, bringing both colour and perfume indoors (snip out the anthers to avoid pollen stains).

Facts buyers love:

  • Flowering: typically July–August (mid to late summer)
  • Height: around 100–120cm (3–4ft) on strong stems
  • Fragrance: lightly to clearly fragrant, typical of Oriental lilies

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant lily bulbs in spring once the soil is workable, or in autumn in milder areas. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Lilium ‘Hocus Pocus’ performs best in a sheltered position where tall stems won’t be buffeted by wind. It’s ideal for mixed borders, cutting gardens, and large pots/containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 15–20 cm deep (roughly 2–3 times the bulb’s height), with the point facing up.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 25–30 cm apart (or plant in small groups for the best display).
  • Soil Prep: Work in compost to improve fertility and drainage. In heavier soils, add grit so bulbs don’t sit wet.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep soil lightly moist while shoots are growing, but never waterlog. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, especially if grown in pots.

Aftercare Tips:

  • As stems grow tall, add discreet support in exposed areas.
  • Deadhead spent flowers, but leave stems and leaves to die back naturally—this feeds the bulb for next year.
  • In autumn, once foliage has yellowed, cut back to ground level.
  • For pots, use a deep container and ensure excellent drainage; protect from becoming saturated in winter.

Top Tip:
For longer vase life, cut stems when the first buds are just opening, and remove anthers to prevent pollen stains. Plant in groups for a bold, scented summer statement.
