Roscoea alpina is a charming, compact hardy ginger from the Himalayas, loved for its orchid-like, purple-lilac flowers that pop up in summer among fresh green, lance-shaped leaves. It’s a brilliant little plant for adding something a bit different to shady borders, woodland edges, rock gardens and containers—especially where you want colour without a big, blousy footprint. Once settled, Roscoea is surprisingly resilient, returning each year from its underground tubers and often improving with age.

Because it naturally grows in cool, mountainous habitats, it appreciates moist but well-drained soil and a sheltered, partially shaded spot—think “dappled shade and decent compost” rather than baking heat.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare roots in spring as growth begins, or in autumn while the soil is still workable, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sheltered spot in partial shade or dappled shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Roscoea alpina is ideal for woodland borders, rock gardens, shady mixed beds and containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant the tuber so the crown sits around 10–15 cm below the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants around 20–30 cm apart.
  • Soil Prep: Work in leaf mould or well-rotted compost to retain moisture, and add a little grit if drainage is poor.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, especially in the first year, but avoid waterlogging.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a mulch in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil.
  • Remove faded flowers if you wish, then allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn.
  • In colder areas, add a deeper winter mulch for extra protection.

Top Tip:
Roscoea alpina looks especially natural planted in small groups among ferns, Hostas and other shade lovers. It’s also lovely in a pot — just keep the compost lightly moist while it’s in growth.
