Triteleia ‘Blues’ (often sold as grassnut or brodiaea) is a brilliant little early-summer bloomer, producing loose clusters of funnel-shaped, violet-blue flowers, each petal highlighted with a darker blue stripe down the centre. It has a light, airy look on slender stems, so it’s perfect for weaving through sunny borders, naturalistic planting, gravel gardens, and pots—plus it’s a lovely cut flower for small vases.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant corms in autumn or spring for flowering the following early summer. In colder or wetter spots, they can also be started in pots and planted out in spring.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun (or light/partial sun) with well-drained soil. Triteleia is ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, prairie-style planting and pots and containers. Good drainage is important, especially while corms are dormant.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms about 8–10 cm deep, with the pointed end upwards.
  • Spacing: Space corms 10–15 cm apart (a little closer in pots for a fuller display).
  • Soil Prep: If your soil is heavy, add horticultural grit to improve drainage. A little garden compost helps with establishment.

Watering:
Water in after planting. Keep the soil lightly moist while in growth. When dormant, avoid the soil staying cold and wet for long periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flowers and allow foliage to die back naturally to feed the corms.
  • Lift and divide congested clumps every few years to maintain vigour and flowering.
  • In frost-prone or wet areas, add a winter mulch or grow in pots you can keep slightly drier under cover.

Top Tip:
Plant Triteleia ‘Blues’ in small drifts so the violet-blue flowers create a soft haze through early summer. It looks especially good with ornamental grasses, Alliums and other airy, meadow-style perennials.
