A waxed Hippeastrum (often called waxed amaryllis) is the ultimate Valentine’s gift plant: romantic, dramatic, and wonderfully easy. The bulb is hand-finished with a decorative wax coating, meaning it’s completely self-contained—no soil, no pot, no watering, just place it on a table and watch the magic happen. In a warm, bright room, it will send up strong stems that open into large, trumpet-shaped flowers—a gorgeous “living bouquet” for the home.

Perfect for gifting to anyone you love—a partner, friend, family member, or a well-deserved treat for yourself—this is a thoughtful, mess-free gift that brings weeks of joy and colour through the season.

Planting Instructions

Display & Care:

A waxed Hippeastrum bulb is ready to grow with no potting up required.

Where to Place:
Stand the bulb upright in a bright spot with indirect light at normal room temperature. Avoid harsh, hot direct sun and keep away from radiators.

Watering:
No watering needed — the wax coating helps seal in moisture and the bulb uses stored energy to grow and flower.

What to Expect:
Flower stems usually appear in around 4–6 weeks (timing varies with warmth and light). Rotate the bulb every few days to help stems grow straight.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Enjoy the blooms for up to a few weeks. As each stem finishes, you can snip it off near the base.
  • Many waxed bulbs are grown primarily for a one-season display. However, if you’d like to try growing it on, carefully remove the wax after flowering and pot the bulb up in compost to rebuild its strength.

Top Tip:
For Valentine’s Day gifting, add a handwritten tag and place the bulb on a pretty dish — it makes a stunning, mess-free centrepiece.
