If you want a plant that stops people in their tracks, Jasminum polyanthum is it. Supplied trained on a hoop and absolutely loaded with around 200 pink buds, this gorgeous jasmine puts on a breathtaking show as the buds burst open into highly fragrant, starry white flowers—often in late winter into spring.

It’s a perfect “living bouquet” for the home or conservatory, filling a room with that unmistakable jasmine perfume. And for a thoughtful seasonal gift, it’s ideal for Valentine’s Day—a romantic plant that lasts far longer than cut flowers and is perfect for any loved one (or a well-deserved treat for yourself).

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

This is a potted climber and can be re-potted or planted into a larger container at most times of year. For best results, repot in spring after flowering (or before strong new growth starts). Avoid disturbing roots when the plant is heavily in bud.

Where to Place:
Grow in a bright position with plenty of light. A cool, bright room, conservatory or greenhouse helps buds develop well, and then keep it bright as it comes into flower. Protect from frost and cold draughts.

How to Plant / Pot Up:

  • Pot: Move into a slightly larger pot only if needed, with good drainage holes.
  • Compost: Use a free-draining compost; add a little horticultural grit if needed.
  • Support: Keep stems tied in to the hoop (or another support) as it grows.

Watering:
Keep compost evenly moist while the plant is in growth and coming into flower, but never waterlog. Reduce watering slightly after flowering, allowing the top of the compost to dry a little between waterings.

Feeding:
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every couple of weeks during active growth.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Rotate the pot every few days for even growth and straighter stems.
  • After flowering, prune lightly to keep the plant neat and encourage bushy growth.
  • In summer you can move it outdoors to a sunny patio, but bring it back under cover when temperatures drop (it is not fully hardy in the UK).

Top Tip:
For the best bud and flower display, give jasmine bright light and avoid letting it dry out completely while buds are forming.
